This week the suggested album is a perfect example of the new latin scene. Ocote Soul sounds is a collaboration between Adrian Quasade (grammy award winning musician/producer, known also as co-founder of the bands Grupo Fantasma and Brownout)and Martín Perna ( founder of Antibalas , that also wrote for and/or recorded for artists like Sharon Jones, Baaba Maal, Angelique Kidjo, The Whitefield Brothers, the Daktaris, No Surrender, Apsci, Architecture in Helsinki). Both artists are located in Austin TX, in the US.
Ocote Soul Sounds is another side project with 5 albums in total (full discography here :http://www.discogs.com/artist/Ocote+Soul+Sounds ). Produced by Eric Hilton(Thievery Corporation), Taurus is Ocote's most polished work and also keeps all that Afro-Latin voodoo that characterised the group since its 2004 debut. In Taurus we have a great blend of yesterday’s Latin beats and tomorrow’s sounds. The album is released by ESL(Eighteenth Street Lounge)Music founded by Thievery Corporation.
As mentioned in the Austin Chronicle website in a review made by Thomas Fawcett :
"Ocote always grooved implicit protest music, yet it takes sharper aim on the rolling Afrobeat of "STTP (Speak Truth to Power)" and "Pan y Circo," an indictment of big-stakes sports. Guest shaman Chico Mann shakes the ancients on "En el Temblor," while Clavier, another Echocentrics thread, charms on a trio of numbers. Add Taurus and Sunshadows to the sensational psychotropic soundtracks cooked up when Perna and Quesada are unbound by their big bands."
