100 songs you shouldn't have missed in 2011

Before the comeback show today at 15:00, it really is time for this.

It comes a bit late, yes. But it would be a crime to just skip it before continuing in 2012. So, what about 2011 in music?

Sure, it was Adele's year, no doubt about it. Adele's great. Regardless of personal taste, no one can deny that, right? With that said, I have to admit that I never checked out her album. And I only really bought "Rolling in the Deep", which I surely included in my 2010 list.

Anyway, there was a lot of great music released in 2011. And here are the best 100 songs according to me. 100 songs you really shouldn't have missed in 2011.

I listed them in no particular order. Most of them I like a lot. And then there's Howler (are they maybe just a cheap Strokes copy?), for example. And The Kooks, where I first just thought: Corny, corny, corny. But then still kept listening, until I really did like 2 songs.

Anyway. If you missed some of the songs, go to youtube and check them out. A few of them might take a few listens, and it's all a matter of taste, yeah yeah. But really, if you like indie music at all (most surely classifies as indie), you gotta give it a try.

"Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster The People I had on my 2010 list, by the way. Although it was 2011 when you could hear it everywhere. I have to say though that lyrics about shooting kids never were that nice to sing along to anyway. Especially after Utøya. However it was meant (yes, it's critical, of course), it's strange humming or singing it. Plus the band's personal taste did put me off a bit - fans of Kanye, and they mistake The Vaccines for Good Charlotte (seriously...).

Lana Del Rey I didn't include either. Pretty good, actually. But not my kind of mood, most of the time. And maybe I'm not into video games, I can't relate. Write a song about playing table football and I'm in.

Beatsteaks

And one more video... to a Berlin song. By the Beatsteaks from Berlin. Unfortunately, this one was never released as a single and there is absolutely no video with the studio audio version. But there's a video from a concert in Amsterdam. And I just have to post it.

No, wait... gonna post a few more songs as well, actually. The Beatsteaks really are quite an interesting German band, I think. Within Germany, they are one of the absolutely biggest bands.

What's quite interesting about them is that it's not really possible to tell what genre their music is.
They started as a pure punk band. After having released two albums in the late 90s, they got signed by Epitaph Records, home of US West Coast Punk Rock, and they were even on the Vans Warped Tour across the USA, where they apparently got quite a lot of attention because of their high energy performances.
The 2002 album "Living Targets" on Epitaph followed, featuring the first minor hits "Summer" and "Let Me In".

Next came the breakthrough album in Germany, "Smack Smash", in 2004. The first time I saw the video for the lead single "Hand In Hand" my thought was: "Amazing! This is actually the same league as The Hives. These guys have the songs, and they're as fun and entertaining as The Hives. Needs to be exported!" I went straight to the record store and bought the single. Next came "I Don't Care As Long As You Sing", and the whole country seemed to love the band.

After "Smack Smash" they decided to experiment a bit more with their sound, as the follow-up album "Limbo Messiah" from 2007 featured some indie and electronic sound as well, and even almost soulish sound with falsetto vocals. Very good decision, as far as I'm concerned. Not being that punk band staying with their trademark sound all the way, getting boring. But actually daring to do something different, to try out things and be creative. And they succeeded with it and stayed relevant.

On the latest album "Boombox" (2011), there is punk rock, new wave, ska and more experimental stuff. Like on all of their albums - in my opinion - not all of it is just great, but a few of the songs are really good.

So, check out a few of the videos below. It's the Beatsteaks' evolution. Or a bit of it, at least.

Also, make sure to check out the second last video. It's the final 2 minutes of a Beatsteaks concert in Camden, London. And it tells a lot about the band. I never thought it would be possible for a German band to do anything like that and do it in London. Whether it's singer Arnim crowdsurfing on a guitar case or ending a concert like in that video - putting up a good show is a big part of the Beatsteaks' charm.

Yes, and in the end, you find the song I originally intended to post, the amateur video of "Let's See" from an Amsterdam concert. Wait for the organ at 1:56 there!

Beatsteaks/ Beat!Beat!Beat! / Bonaparte / Superpunk

Deutschlandreise pt. 1 - the playlist for the November 18 show

Finally, it was time to promote some German music. Gonna do a second part sometime soon, too much not in the show that should have been there. If you missed the show, check out the videos below. Germany has a bit more to offer than techno and trashy pop sh*t, right?

1 Beatsteaks - Milk & Honey
2 Chuckamuck - Ostsee
3 Boy - Little Numbers
4 Kilians - Fight The Start
5 Beat!Beat!Beat! - Fireworks
6 Bonaparte - Who Took The Pill?
7 Bonaparte - Anti Anti
8 Beatsteaks - Cut off the Top
9 Nneka - Heartbeat
10 Beatsteaks - Let's See
11 Frittenbude - Mindestens in 1000 Jahren
12 Digitalism - Pogo
13 Wir Sind Helden - Nur ein Wort
14 Superpunk - Neue Zähne für meinen Bruder und mich
15 Die Sterne - Big in Berlin
16 Beatsteaks - I Don't Care As Long As You Sing

Next stop: Deutschland

Yes, Zeit für eine Deutschlandreise. Think Germany can just do techno and awful trash pop shit? Think again. There's a lot of good music, most of it just doesn't get exported.

I had the show prepared a few weeks already, but I'll probably make some changes. Expect both English language and German language indie music. And probably a lot of Berlin and a lot of Hamburg music.

Next Friday, 14:00!

Your essential dose of Indie, Britpop, Mod, Northern Soul & Garage Rock, every Friday. Cool stuff from the 60s to now: unsigned bands, rare tracks and acoustic versions, but also big artists and big hits. The rockinest way to start the weekend!
