a matter of taste? of course it is. and in this case also a matter of what fits. some 2010 music i listened to never fit in with the mojo filter, and so i never played it, like the chemical brothers (swoon!) or katy b. i didn't even include hurts or the gaslight anthem in the list. not really sure why, since i do like them. guess for some reason i never thought they fit in so well with the rest of the music i played. and well, i didn't include duffy, though i do like "well, well, well". i'm always between liking her voice a lot (which is the case with that song) and finding it annoying.
and of course there was no space in this list for duck sauce (come on, if you haven't heard it 100 times it is cool), k'naan (yes!) or jessy matador (oh yeah...). and no lena either, although before it got killed by airplay i thought it was quite cool.
but so much about that. now i recommend you go to youtube and listen to the songs from the list that you didn't know already. 2010 was a year with lots of great releases, and you should have given them a chance before the 2011 wave of cool new music comes rolling!
actually there cannot just be one video of the year. i thought so at first. the black keys video is brilliant for sure. but, if you love gothenburg, there are two videos that HAVE to be added here. well, just see for yourselves:
yes, gothenburg music. when joel alme already had put out one album and i hadn't listened to any of his music yet, i once read an interview with joel alme. and he said something not so positive about håkan hellström, it became very clear he didn't really like håkan's music. neither jens lekman's. because of that, i decided that he's gotta be an idiot and didn't listen to his music.
i changed that though this year, after hearing the song "you will only get it once". i got up, left my room and got on the tram to bengans and bought the album. and i wasn't disappointed. 11 songs, and "you will only get it once" is about as uptempo as it gets here. but it doesn't get boring, thanks to joel's knack for melodies and, maybe above all, thanks to his voice. he's got soul, you can say in a way. not really soul as in motown soul, like i read somewhere else. don't expect motown sound. but his voice - he sings it like he means it, just puts a lot of soul into these songs, that all seem to deal with lost love. check out the videos below. if you like those songs, chances are you will like the whole album.
just one last thing: i hope i got joel alme wrong and he does respect håkan's and jens lekman's music. who by the way both not only are from gothenburg as well but also released some new music this year. quite a shame i haven't checked out håkan's album yet. will definitely go to bengans and buy it before heading off to germany for christmas. who knows, it's håkan, after all, i might even have been a little quick with my pick for the album of the year. will see!
